The bees visit between 50 and 100 flowers on each trip and will carry half their weight in nectar.
On return to the hive, the worker passes the nectar to other worker bees who store it in honeycomb cells. Inside the hive the bees reduce the water content of the nectar and when this has been reduced to between 16-20% they place a wax cap over the nectar which ripens into honey.
When the bees have capped over the frames of honey, these are collected by our beekeeper and the honey is extracted. At Springhill all the honey extracted is immediately filtered to remove any wax, placed into jars and sealed; it does not go through any processes that may unbalance its completely natural state.
To make 1lb (454g) one jar of honey, worker bees will travel about 50,000 miles and visit about 2 million flowers.
It has been proven that Local Honey can help with symptoms of hay fever and other allergies.
In the summer months the queen can lay over 1,000 eggs per day.
Bees can see Ultra Violet light, some flowers have markings which can only be seen by bees, these markings direct the bees to the centre of the flowers where the nectar is stored.
A female worker bee will visit over 44,000 flowers in her lifetime!
Bees collect water to mix with stored honey so it is easier to consume and also to help cool the hive in the summer. They do not store water but collect it as and when they need it. At Springhill our bees collect water from our wildlife pond situated about 30 metres from the hives.
